Dark Souls Build Calculator — Plan Your Character Online

Dark Souls doesn’t let you respec — every stat point you spend is permanent, so a wrong allocation early on usually means restarting. The Ghostern Dark Souls Build Calculator lets you plan your class, stats, weapon, armor, and rings before you spend a single soul.

I built this after restarting characters more times than I’d like to admit, having dumped levels into stats that didn’t actually help the weapon I ended up using. This is a free, browser-based planner for Dark Souls 1 (Remastered and original) — it shows your Soul Level, HP, Stamina, Equip Load, Attack Rating, and roll type in real time as you adjust stats. Choose from all ten starting classes, seven weapons, four armor weight categories, and the game’s most commonly used rings. No download, no account, no ads.

How to Use the Calculator

Every output updates in real time as you change any input. The image below shows where each control lives.

Dark Souls Build Calculator UI – class selector, stat sliders, weapon dropdown, armour weight, rings, and real‑time stat summary panel

Step-by-Step

  1. Select a starting class. This sets your base stats. Pick the class closest to your intended build to minimize wasted levels. The Deprived starts flat at 11 in everything, which some players prefer for full control when min-maxing; the Knight starts with high Vitality and Strength, a common beginner pick for tanky, slow-weapon builds.
  2. Set your stat sliders (1–99 each). Soul Level updates instantly as you move them, along with the souls needed for your next level.
  3. Choose your weapon. Attack Rating is calculated from the weapon’s base damage and scaling grade combined with your stats. Scaling grades run from E to S — see the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki for the full breakdown.
  4. Set your armor weight — None, Light, Medium, Heavy, or Havel’s Set. Combined with your Endurance, this determines your Equip Load and roll type.
  5. Add rings. Choose from Ring of Favor and Protection, Havel’s Ring, Wolf Ring, and Cloranthy Ring — effects apply immediately to your stats.
  6. Read your results. Soul Level, souls to next level, HP, Stamina, Equip Load, and Attack Rating update automatically, along with your roll type.

All 10 Starting Classes — Base Stats

Your starting class sets your base stats and Soul Level floor — picking the right one for your build can save several levels you’d otherwise spend catching a stat up.

⚠️ Verify these exact base-stat values against a current wiki before publishing — confirm each number, not just the stat list itself.

Build tip: The Pyromancer is a common pick for new players — it starts with a Pyromancy Flame and balanced stats at Soul Level 1, so it doesn’t waste levels on stats you may not want. The Sorcerer suits pure Intelligence builds, starting with both Attunement and Intelligence already high.

What Each Stat Does

❤️ Vitality — HP

Vitality is your main survivability stat. HP gains are strongest at lower levels and slow down past a soft cap — check the exact threshold on the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki before relying on a specific number. For PvE, most builds land comfortably in the 30–40 range.

📖 Attunement — Spell Slots

Each Attunement threshold unlocks another spell slot. Non-caster builds can usually leave this at the class base unless they want one slot free for a utility spell.

🏃 Endurance — Stamina and Equip Load

Endurance governs both your Stamina (how many attacks, rolls, and blocks you can chain) and your Equip Load capacity — this is the single stat that determines both. Gains on both fronts slow past a soft cap; see the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki for the current figures. Most builds benefit from a solid Endurance investment beyond the class base.

💪 Strength — Physical Weapon Damage

Strength lets you wield heavier weapons and scales Strength-favoring weapons. Two-handing a weapon applies a Strength bonus, effectively letting you meet a higher Strength requirement one-handed stat total than the raw number suggests — see the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki for the exact multiplier and soft cap.

🏹 Dexterity — Skill-Based Weapon Scaling

Dexterity scales katanas, curved swords, rapiers, spears, and most light weapons, and affects casting speed as a secondary benefit relevant to hybrid builds.

🛡️ Resistance — Defense and Poise Growth

Resistance is Dark Souls 1’s often-overlooked eighth stat — it contributes to elemental defense and, at base game launch, poise health. Most builds leave it at the class default since its returns are considered weak per point compared to other stats, but it’s a real stat worth knowing exists.

🔮 Intelligence — Sorcery Damage

Intelligence scales sorcery spells and Intelligence-infused weapons like the Moonlight Greatsword. Sorcery builds typically invest well past the class base to reach useful spell damage.

✨ Faith — Miracle and Lightning Damage

Faith powers miracles, lightning weapons, and the divine infusion, and gates access to certain rings and covenant rewards.

Roll Types — Fast, Mid, Fat, and Overburdened

Your roll type depends on what percentage of your maximum Equip Load you’re currently using — arguably the most important number the calculator gives you, since it directly affects your invincibility frames and survival rate.

FAST ROLL

Under 25% equip load. Maximum iframes, fastest roll distance.

MID ROLL

25–50% equip load. Standard iframes — where most PvE builds sit.

FAT ROLL

50–100% equip load. Reduced iframes, slower animation.

Above 100% you’re Overburdened — no roll at all, only a slow walk. Fix this with more Endurance, Havel’s Ring, the Ring of Favor and Protection, or lighter armor.

Equip Load tip: At the common PvP meta of Soul Level 120, many players target mid-roll (under 50% equip load) rather than fast-roll, since the extra iframes matter less against opponents who read your roll timing regardless of speed.

Weapons in the Calculator

The calculator includes seven commonly used Dark Souls 1 weapons with their base damage values and scaling grades, sourced from the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki.

WeaponPhysMagFireSTR ScaleDEX ScaleINT ScaleBest Build
Claymore13800DDQuality (STR/DEX)
Zweihander14100DDQuality / STR

Black Knight Sword18600CEStrength (drop farm)
Moonlight GS01800EEBPure Intelligence

AR tip: The Black Knight Sword’s high base physical damage makes it a strong early farming target in the Undead Burg/Parish, even before heavy upgrade investment. It can’t be reinforced, so its ceiling is lower than upgradeable weapons at higher Soul Levels.

Popular Build Archetypes

Strength Build (SL 120)

A common target split: heavy Vitality and Endurance investment, high Strength, mid-roll with Heavy Set armor. The Greatsword, Great Club, or Demon’s Greataxe are typical weapon choices, often paired with Ring of Favor and Protection plus Havel’s Ring.

Dexterity Build (SL 120)

Lighter armor, faster roll, high Dexterity. The Uchigatana, Washing Pole, and Chaos Blade are common picks.

Intelligence Sorcerer (SL 100–120)

Enough Attunement for your spell loadout, solid Endurance, and Intelligence pushed well past the class base. The Moonlight Greatsword or a catalyst are the usual damage source — expect low output until your Intelligence investment catches up.

Quality Build (SL 120)

Roughly even Strength and Dexterity alongside solid Vitality and Endurance. The Claymore and Zweihander are the classic quality-build weapons.

Rings in the Calculator

  • Ring of Favor and Protection — boosts HP, Stamina, and Equip Load together. A strong pick for almost any build.
  • Havel’s Ring — significantly increases Equip Load capacity, key for heavy armor builds.
  • Wolf Ring — adds Poise, useful for tanking hits without getting staggered.
  • Cloranthy Ring — speeds up Stamina regeneration, good for aggressive, offense-heavy playstyles.

Why the Calculator Works This Way

Real-time updates matter because that’s how the game itself feels — dragging a slider and seeing your roll type change instantly is far more useful than clicking “Calculate” and waiting. Roll type sits at the top of the results because it’s the number most players check first, and it’s tied directly to survival. Souls-to-next-level uses the game’s real progression curve rather than a rough estimate, since exact costs matter for planning farming routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best starting class in Dark Souls?

The Pyromancer is a common recommendation for new players — balanced stats and Soul Level 1. The Sorcerer suits pure Intelligence builds.

What are the soft caps for stats in Dark Souls 1?

Most stats have a point past which gains slow noticeably — check the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki for current exact thresholds per stat before planning around a specific number.

What’s the difference between fast, mid, and fat roll?

Fast roll is under 25% equip load with maximum iframes; mid roll is 25–50%, standard iframes, where most PvE builds sit; fat roll is 50–100%, reduced iframes and slower animation.

Is this calculator free?

Yes — no signup, no watermark, no limit on how many builds you plan.

Does it work for Dark Souls Remastered?

Yes, it’s built around Dark Souls 1 mechanics, which are consistent between the original and Remastered.

What rings are included?

Ring of Favor and Protection, Havel’s Ring, Wolf Ring, and Cloranthy Ring.

Can I use this for PvP builds?

Yes — it’s commonly used for planning around Soul Level 120–125, showing roll type, AR, and stat distribution at a glance.

Is this affiliated with FromSoftware or Bandai Namco?

No — independent fan tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by FromSoftware, Bandai Namco, or any publisher.

What’s the best weapon for a Strength build?

The Greatsword, Great Club, and Demon’s Greataxe are common Strength-build picks, each with different scaling and moveset trade-offs — check the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki for exact scaling values.

What’s the meta Soul Level for PvP?

Soul Level 120 (sometimes 120–125) is the most commonly used PvP meta level in the community.

How does weapon scaling work?

Each weapon has a letter grade (E to S) per stat, determining how much bonus damage that stat contributes — see the Dark Souls Fandom Wiki for the exact bonus curve.

What is Poise and how does it affect my build?

Poise determines whether you get staggered when hit — higher Poise lets you tank a hit without interruption, relevant for heavy weapons and tank builds. The Wolf Ring is a common way to boost it.

Can I respec in Dark Souls 1?

No — unlike Dark Souls 2, 3, or Elden Ring, stat points are permanent once spent. That’s exactly why planning ahead matters.

What’s the best class for a Quality build?

The Warrior is a common pick — solid starting Strength and Dexterity with minimal wasted levels on magic stats.

What’s the ideal Endurance for a mid-roll build?

Enough that your equip weight stays under 50% of maximum — the exact number depends on your armor and weapon choices, and Endurance governs both your Stamina and your Equip Load capacity.
