Dark Souls has one build constraint that Elden Ring doesn’t: you cannot respec. Every stat point is permanent until New Game+. This makes build planning before you invest a single soul the most important decision in the game — not which weapon looks coolest, not which armor weighs the least, but which stat distribution reaches your target numbers efficiently without dead weight.
I’ve built every major archetype in Dark Souls Remastered across multiple playthroughs. Here’s what each build type actually does, where the numbers break, and what gear makes each one work.
Dark Souls Build Types — The Core Concept
Dark Souls has eight stats that affect combat: Vitality, Attunement, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Resistance, Intelligence, Faith.
Resistance is always wasted. Every single point into Resistance gives you negligible defensive return compared to investing the same soul level into Vitality or Endurance. Every optimised build in Dark Souls ignores Resistance completely.
Soul Level 120 is the PvP meta. Build everything around this cap. Going over 120 locks you out of most PvP encounters in the Darkroot Garden and Oolacile invasions. If you’re purely PvE, ignore this constraint — but it’s good practice regardless.
The no-respec rule means this: if you hit level 80 and realise your build doesn’t work, you restart. Plan before you level.
Use the Dark Souls Build Calculator to map your exact stat allocation before spending a single soul. It shows live HP, stamina, equip load, and stat totals — all calculated using the actual in-game formulas, not approximations.
Stat Soft Caps — What You Need to Know Before Choosing a Build
Every offensive stat in Dark Souls has a soft cap at level 40. After 40, damage scaling drops sharply. After 50, it drops further. After 60, you’re getting almost nothing.
| Stat | Soft Cap 1 | Soft Cap 2 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitality (HP) | 30 | 50 | HP returns drop sharply after 50 |
| Endurance (Stamina) | 40 | — | Stamina caps completely at 40 |
| Strength | 40 | 50 | Diminishing after 40, near-zero after 50 |
| Dexterity | 40 | 45 | Slight returns 40–45, dead after |
| Intelligence | 40 | 50 | Crystal catalysts scale beyond 40 |
| Faith | 30 | 50 | Lightning/Darkmoon miracles care about 50 |
Endurance is unique: stamina hard-caps at level 40. Adding any Endurance above 40 gives zero extra stamina. It still raises equip load, but never invest above 40 Endurance if stamina is your concern.
The implication for builds: most optimised SL 120 builds reach 40 in their primary damage stat, 30–40 VIT, 40 END (for stamina cap), and spend the remaining levels on secondary investments.
Build Type 1 — Strength
Core stats at SL 120: VIT 40, ATT 0, END 40, STR 40–50, DEX 16–18, RES 0, INT 0, FTH 0
Starting class: Bandit or Knight
Strength builds in Dark Souls are defined by one trade-off: massive AR and poise at the cost of stamina economy. Greatswords, ultra greatswords, and great hammers all consume large stamina chunks per swing. Missing an attack against a fast enemy is more punishing than it would be on a Dexterity build.
Two-handing any weapon multiplies your effective Strength by 1.5. A character with 27 STR two-handing a weapon counts as having 40 STR for damage calculation purposes. This is one of the most important mechanics in the game for Strength builds — you can often stop investing at 40 STR and two-hand to reach effective 60 STR.
Best Strength weapons and their requirements:
| Weapon | STR Req | DEX Req | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zweihander | 24 | 10 | Best beginner STR weapon, drops from skeletons in Graveyard |
| Giant’s Halberd | 36 | 10 | Best poke range in the game, sold by Giant Blacksmith |
| Smough’s Hammer | 40 | 12 | Highest base AR of any STR weapon, farmable off Smough |
| Great Club | 28 | 0 | Zero DEX requirement, pure STR investment |
| Demon’s Greataxe | 46 | 0 | Highest AR in the game at 99 STR — PvE only |
| Black Knight Sword | 20 | 18 | Quality scaling but favors STR, farmable off Black Knights |
Armor for Strength builds: Havel’s Set (102.5 poise, highest in game), Giant Armor Set, or Stone Armor for mid-range poise. Poise in Dark Souls works on a threshold system — you either have enough to tank a hit without staggering or you don’t. Most weapon classes require 53 poise minimum to not stagger from another player’s standard attack.
Rings for Strength builds:
- Havel’s Ring — raises equip load by 50%, essential for heavy armor + heavy weapon
- Ring of Favor and Protection — +20 HP, +20 stamina, +10 equip load (unequipping breaks it)
- Wolf Ring — +40 poise if you can’t reach threshold with armor alone
Weakness of Strength builds: The stamina cost per swing punishes missed attacks more than any other build type. Against fast opponents using quickstep or high DEX weapons, a whiffed ultra greatsword swing leaves you exposed for 1.5–2 seconds of recovery animation.
Build Type 2 — Dexterity
Core stats at SL 120: VIT 40, ATT 0, END 40, STR 14–16, DEX 40–45, RES 0, INT 0, FTH 0
Starting class: Wanderer or Pyromancer
Dexterity builds trade raw damage for attack speed, roll recovery windows, and stamina efficiency. DEX weapons typically have lower AR per hit than their STR equivalents, but they attack 30–50% faster — meaning total DPS is comparable or higher in sustained exchanges.
DEX also increases casting speed for sorceries and pyromancies. At 45 DEX, spell cast animations reach minimum duration. This makes DEX a natural secondary for Sorcery hybrid builds.
Best Dexterity weapons:
| Weapon | STR Req | DEX Req | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balder Side Sword | 10 | 14 | Best all-around DEX weapon in the game — unique moveset, farmable |
| Chaos Blade | 13 | 18 | Highest DEX-scaling AR, deals self-damage per hit |
| Uchigatana | 14 | 14 | Bleed buildup, fast moveset, best early DEX weapon |
| Iaito | 14 | 18 | Horizontal slash R2, excellent for backstab fishing |
| Ricard’s Rapier | 8 | 20 | Highest poke DPS in the game against opponents in narrow spaces |
| Painting Guardian Sword | 7 | 20 | Tiny, fast, great for PvP hitbox manipulation |
The Balder Side Sword note from personal testing: I’ve used BSS across four different SL 120 DEX builds. Its running attack has a deceptively long reach that catches rolls. Its two-handed R2 is a powerful lunge that covers distance. Of all DEX weapons in the game, this one performs most consistently across PvP and PvE.
Infusions for DEX builds:
- Sharp Upgrade Path doesn’t exist in Dark Souls 1 — that’s Dark Souls 3
- Raw removes scaling, increases base AR — useful for low-level twinking only
- Enchanted adds Magic damage scaling off INT — not for pure DEX
- Lightning removes all stat scaling, adds flat Lightning AR — used for “Quality-ish” builds that don’t want to invest in INT/FTH but want high AR
At 40 DEX with a DEX-scaling weapon on the Standard path, you’re getting full scaling contribution. Lightning infusion trades your scaling for flat Lightning AR that works regardless of stats — useful on a backup weapon.
Rings for DEX builds:
- Flynn’s Ring — raises physical AR based on low equip load (under 50 units = maximum bonus)
- Red Tearstone Ring — +50% damage below 20% HP (high risk, very high reward)
- Ring of Favor and Protection — stamina + HP + equip load utility
Build Type 3 — Intelligence (Sorcery)
Core stats at SL 120: VIT 30–35, ATT 23–36, END 40, STR 12, DEX 45 (cast speed), INT 44–50, RES 0, FTH 0
Starting class: Sorcerer or Pyromancer
Sorcery in Dark Souls Remastered is the highest burst damage build type in the game, period. Crystal Soul Spear at 50 INT with Tin Crystallization Catalyst deals more damage per cast than any melee build can output per swing. The trade-off is finite casts, mandatory attunement investment, and complete vulnerability during cast animations.
The 45 DEX requirement for INT builds is mandatory if you’re using any sorcery with a cast time. At 45 DEX, spell animation speed reaches its cap. At 10 DEX, the same spell takes roughly 30% longer to animate — that’s the window an opponent uses to close distance or roll through your spell.
Intelligence thresholds that matter:
| INT Level | What You Unlock |
|---|---|
| 10 | Sorcerer’s Catalyst (starting) |
| 14 | Farron Flashsword (if using) |
| 16 | Aural Decoy |
| 25 | Soul Spear (Siegmeyer quest reward) |
| 30 | White Dragon Breath (trades for) |
| 36 | Crystal Soul Spear (requires Logan’s questline) |
| 44 | Tin Crystallization Catalyst usable (highest INT scaling catalyst) |
| 50 | Maximum practical INT — Moonlight Greatsword requirement |
Best catalysts and their scaling:
| Catalyst | INT Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tin Crystallization Catalyst | 44 | Highest spell AR scaling but only 5 casts per spell slot |
| Logan’s Catalyst | 0 | Scales with INT, best all-purpose catalyst |
| Oolacile Ivory Catalyst | 8 | Lowest requirements, weakest scaling |
| Izalith Catalyst | 0 | Faith/INT hybrid scaling |
The Tin Crystallization Catalyst trade-off from my testing: against a boss, TCC + Crystal Soul Spear at 50 INT outputs approximately 1,800–2,100 damage per cast against non-resistant enemies. Against smarter PvP opponents who bait your limited casts, you run dry. Logan’s Catalyst gives you unlimited casts at lower damage ceiling. Most competitive sorcery players use TCC for PvE and Logan’s for PvP.
Sorcery spell priority (in order of usefulness):
- Soul Arrow — free, available from start, bread-and-butter low-FP poke
- Great Soul Arrow — double damage, same cast speed, buy from Griggs
- Soul Spear — pierces enemies, best mid-game damage spell
- Crystal Soul Spear — peak damage, limited casts, requires Logan questline
- White Dragon Breath — AoE cone, niche but devastating in choke points
- Homing Crystal Soulmass — fires on proximity, excellent for fog gate entries
Rings for Sorcery builds:
- Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring — +25% sorcery damage (mandatory)
- Logan’s Ring (Crystal Ring Shield parry to magic damage) — situational
- Ring of Favor and Protection — HP/stamina/equip load
- Dusk Crown Ring — +50% spell casts, -50% HP (high risk, worth it in PvE)
Build Type 4 — Faith
Core stats at SL 120: VIT 30–35, ATT 23–32, END 40, STR 14–16, DEX 14–16, INT 0, FTH 30–50, RES 0
Starting class: Cleric or Pyromancer
Faith builds in Dark Souls are uniquely split into two completely different gameplay styles depending on how high you take your Faith investment.
Faith 30: Lightning weapon buffs (Darkmoon Blade, Lightning Blade). You’re playing a hybrid melee build that uses miracles as powerful combat buffs, not as primary damage. Most of your damage comes from your weapon — Faith is a force multiplier.
Faith 50: Full miracle damage output. Gravelord Sword Dance, Sunlight Spear, Wrath of the Gods at 50 FTH. You’re a caster who can also melee when forced to.
Faith-exclusive weapons:
| Weapon | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Darkmoon Talisman | 20 FTH | Increases Darkmoon Blade power |
| Sunlight Straight Sword | 16 STR, 10 DEX | Bonus damage vs undead, faith scaling |
| Crescent Axe | 12 STR, 12 DEX | Faith scaling standard path |
| Astora’s Straight Sword | 10 STR, 10 DEX, 14 FTH | Lightest quality-faith weapon |
Key miracles and their FTH requirements:
| Miracle | FTH Required | Slots | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heal | 12 | 1 | Available from Petrus, early essential |
| Force | 12 | 1 | Knockback, great for ledge PvP |
| Great Heal | 24 | 2 | Best HP restoration in the game |
| Wrath of the Gods | 28 | 4 | Massive AoE burst — Ring of Artorias needed |
| Sunlight Spear | 50 | 4 | Highest damage miracle, requires Gwyn’s Soul |
| Darkmoon Blade | 30 | 2 | Buff that adds flat magic AR based on covenant rank |
| Lightning Blade | 30 | 2 | Buff that adds Lightning AR, works on any weapon |
The Wrath of the Gods note: WotG at 50 FTH deals 1,200–1,600 damage in a full AoE ring with knockback. In PvP, it punishes roll-spam and roll-catch attempts catastrophically. It requires 4 attunement slots — plan your Attunement investment (23 ATT = 4 slots, 32 ATT = 5 slots) around this if you’re running it.
Rings for Faith builds:
- Canvas Talisman (not a ring, but essential — highest spell buff of all talismans at 50 FTH)
- Ring of Favor and Protection — standard utility
- Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring — only useful if you’re also running sorceries (hybrid)
- Darkmoon Seance Ring — +1 attunement slot (useful at ATT 10 or 14 to hit a slot breakpoint cheaply)
Build Type 5 — Pyromancy (The Exception)
Core stats at SL 120: VIT 40, ATT 32, END 40, STR 12, DEX 45, INT 0, FTH 0, RES 0
Starting class: Pyromancer
Pyromancy in Dark Souls is unique: it does not scale with any stat. Pyromancy damage is determined entirely by your Pyromancy Flame upgrade level (+15 standard or +5 ascended). No INT. No FTH. Nothing.
This makes Pyromancy builds some of the most level-efficient in the game. At SL 120, you have the full remaining budget after VIT/END/DEX for whatever secondary you want — most Pyromancy builds pair this with 40 STR or 40 DEX for a hybrid that uses Pyromancy for burst and melee for sustained damage.
Pyromancy spells by use case:
| Spell | Slots | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Fireball | 1 | Early game, solid AoE |
| Fire Orb | 1 | Higher base damage Fireball |
| Great Fireball | 2 | Best damage-per-slot ratio |
| Combustion | 1 | Zero cast time, instant, catches rolls |
| Great Combustion | 1 | Same zero cast time, double damage |
| Fire Tempest | 4 | Massive AoE, standing cast required |
| Power Within | 1 | +50% damage buff, drains HP per second |
Great Combustion is the strongest PvP pyromancy in my experience. Zero startup animation, fires on button press, deals 400–600 damage at Ascended Flame +5. Opponents who understand Fireball timing do not understand Great Combustion timing because there is no timing — it fires instantly.
Build Type 6 — Quality (STR/DEX Hybrid)
Core stats at SL 120: VIT 40, ATT 0, END 40, STR 27–40, DEX 27–40, INT 0, FTH 0
Starting class: Knight or Wanderer
Quality builds split investment between Strength and Dexterity to qualify for and scale with a wider range of weapons. The idea is flexibility — you can use a Black Knight Sword (20/18), a Balder Side Sword (10/14), and a Zweihander (24/10) all on the same character.
The mathematical case for Quality: At 40/40 STR/DEX on a weapon with balanced A/B or B/A scaling in both stats, your total AR is higher than a pure 50 STR or pure 45 DEX build on the same weapon. Black Knight weapons in particular perform better at 40/40 than they do with pure stat investment.
Best Quality weapons:
| Weapon | STR/DEX Scaling | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Black Knight Sword | C/C | Bonus damage vs demons, long reach |
| Claymore | C/D | Best Quality greatsword, excellent moveset |
| Astora’s Greatsword | B/B | Balanced scaling, very high AR at 40/40 |
| Black Knight Halberd | C/C | Top-tier poise damage and range |
Rings for Quality builds:
- Ring of Favor and Protection — standard
- Havel’s Ring — if running medium-heavy armor for poise thresholds
Build Type 7 — Intelligence/Faith Hybrid (Dark Moon / Dragon Scales)
Core stats at SL 120: VIT 25, ATT 36, END 40, STR 12, DEX 45, INT 30, FTH 30, RES 0
Starting class: Pyromancer
Split INT/FTH investment unlocks Izalith Staff sorceries and scales certain catalysts that use both stats. More practically: this build runs Sorcery, Miracles, and Pyromancy simultaneously — the triple-caster archetype.
This is the hardest build to play well because FP economy (Attunement) is constantly strained. At 36 ATT you get 5 attunement slots — enough for 2 sorceries, 2 miracles, and 1 pyromancy if you’re careful about slot allocation.
This build is not recommended for first playthroughs. The payoff (full spell access) doesn’t outweigh the complexity of managing three spell types and their respective equipment simultaneously.
How to Plan Your Build Before You Spend a Single Soul
- Decide your primary damage stat first — the one you’re scaling your main weapon with
- Lock VIT at 30–40 depending on how much HP you need (30 = 1,000 HP approx, 40 = 1,300 HP)
- Lock END at 40 — always, for every build
- Meet your secondary stat minimums (DEX 45 for cast speed if casting, STR 16 for two-hand threshold if STR build)
- Allocate Attunement only if you’re casting — each threshold: 10, 14, 18, 23, 28, 32 ATT
- Fill remaining levels into primary damage stat to soft cap
Then verify the numbers before committing. The Dark Souls Build Calculator calculates live HP at your VIT level, stamina at your END level, equip load thresholds, and lets you see the full stat distribution across all eight stats before you spend a single level. I built it specifically to solve the problem of finding out your build doesn’t work at soul level 80 with no respec available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I respec in Dark Souls? No. Dark Souls (original and Remastered) has no respec mechanic. Your stat allocation is permanent on a given character. If you commit to the wrong build, you either continue with the inefficiency or start a new character. This is why planning before investing souls is essential.
What is the best build for beginners in Dark Souls? Strength/tank or Quality hybrid. Both give you the maximum survivability margin (high VIT, high poise) while being mechanically forgiving — you don’t need to manage spell slots, cast timing, or catalyst swapping. A Zweihander two-handed at 27 STR with Havel’s Ring clears the entire game.
What is the Dark Souls PvP meta soul level? SL 120 is the established PvP meta for matchmaking in invasions, the Darkroot Garden arena, and Oolacile areas. Building to exactly SL 120 with your target stats maximises your chances of finding and being found by other players at the same level.
Is Pyromancy overpowered in Dark Souls? Pyromancy at Ascended Flame +5 outputs damage comparable to 50 INT sorcery with zero stat investment. Many consider it overtuned for PvP — Great Combustion in particular. Whether it’s “overpowered” depends on whether your opponent knows the tell. For PvE, it’s simply the most efficient tool in the game.
What does Resistance actually do in Dark Souls? Resistance slightly increases your defenses against Poison, Bleed, Curse, and Toxic buildup. The returns are so minimal relative to investing those levels in Vitality or Endurance that every optimised build in the game ignores it completely. It is the only stat in Dark Souls with no effective build use case.
How many attunement slots do I need? Depends on your spell count. ATT 10 = 1 slot, ATT 14 = 2, ATT 18 = 3, ATT 23 = 4, ATT 28 = 5, ATT 32 = 6. For most casting builds, 23 ATT (4 slots) covers the essential spell set. Darkmoon Seance Ring gives +1 slot for free if you need an extra without leveling ATT.
