Your starting class in Elden Ring determines your base stat spread at level 1. It does not lock you into a playstyle. Any class can wield any weapon — eventually. What your class actually controls is how efficiently you reach your build’s target stats and what your Rune Level looks like when you get there.
I’ve built nine out of ten starting classes to meta level (RL 150) across multiple playthroughs. Here’s what the numbers actually say.
What “Best Starting Class” Actually Means — The Math
Every Elden Ring character starts with a fixed pool of stat points distributed across eight stats: Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane.
The class that wastes the fewest points on stats your build doesn’t use is the best class for that build.
Example: If you’re building a pure Strength character targeting 60 STR, 40 VIG, 20 END — you need zero Mind, zero Intelligence, zero Faith, zero Arcane above the minimum. A Hero (base ARC 1, base INT 7, base FTH 8) wastes fewer points than a Prophet (base FTH 16, base INT 14) for that same build.
This is why “best starting class” is not a universal answer. It’s a per-build optimisation problem.
The one universal rule: Wretch is theoretically the most efficient class for any build because it starts at level 1 with 10 in every stat — no wasted points anywhere. But it’s also the hardest start because you have no weapon, no armor, and the lowest survivability of any class in the early game. I’ve done one Wretch run. I don’t recommend it as a first character.
All 10 Starting Classes — Stats at Level 1
| Class | Level | VIG | MND | END | STR | DEX | INT | FTH | ARC |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vagabond | 9 | 15 | 10 | 11 | 14 | 13 | 9 | 9 | 7 |
| Warrior | 8 | 11 | 12 | 11 | 10 | 16 | 10 | 8 | 9 |
| Hero | 7 | 14 | 9 | 12 | 16 | 9 | 7 | 8 | 11 |
| Bandit | 5 | 10 | 11 | 10 | 9 | 13 | 9 | 8 | 14 |
| Astrologer | 6 | 9 | 15 | 9 | 8 | 12 | 16 | 7 | 9 |
| Prophet | 7 | 10 | 14 | 8 | 11 | 10 | 7 | 16 | 10 |
| Samurai | 9 | 12 | 11 | 13 | 12 | 15 | 9 | 8 | 8 |
| Prisoner | 9 | 11 | 12 | 11 | 11 | 14 | 14 | 6 | 9 |
| Confessor | 10 | 10 | 13 | 10 | 12 | 12 | 9 | 14 | 9 |
| Wretch | 1 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
Best Class by Build Type — Ranked
1. Strength Build → Hero
Target stats: 60 STR, 40 VIG, 25 END, 15 DEX (minimum for dual-wield)
Hero starts with 16 STR — the highest of any class. It also starts with the lowest wasted offensive stats: INT 7, FTH 8, ARC 11. That ARC is slightly higher than ideal but still saves you 7+ levels compared to starting as Vagabond or Confessor.
Best Strength weapons: Giant Crusher (46 STR one-hand requirement), Greatsword (28 STR), Prelate’s Inferno Crozier (45 STR)
Soft cap targets:
- STR hits first soft cap at 20, second at 55, hard cap at 80
- VIG soft cap at 40, second soft cap at 60
- END soft cap at 25 (diminishing returns after)
Run your exact damage numbers through the Elden Ring Weapon Calculator before committing to 60 STR vs 55 STR — on most heavy weapons, the AR difference between 55 and 60 is under 12 points. Not always worth 5 levels.
Avoid if: You want a Strength/Faith hybrid. For that, Confessor or Prophet saves more points on the FTH side.
2. Dexterity Build → Samurai
Target stats: 80 DEX, 40 VIG, 20 END, 15 STR (minimum requirements)
Samurai starts with 15 DEX and 13 END — both strong for a DEX build — plus the Uchigatana as a starting weapon, which is genuinely one of the best DEX weapons in the game at any upgrade level. I’ve cleared the base game with a +25 Uchigatana. It does not fall off.
The Samurai also gets a Longbow for range, a full armor set, and Fire Grease — making the early game significantly more manageable than most other classes.
Best DEX weapons: Uchigatana (15/11 STR/DEX), Nagakiba (18/22), Bloodhound’s Fang (17/22), Moonveil (requires INT)
What DEX actually does: DEX scaling matters most on weapons with B or A DEX scaling. At 80 DEX (the second soft cap), you’re getting maximum DEX-scaling contribution. Most competitive DEX builds stop at 60 DEX (first major soft cap), then invest the remaining levels into VIG, END, or a secondary stat.
First soft cap: 20 DEX. Second: 55. Hard cap: 80. The jump from 20→55 is where most of your AR comes from.
3. Intelligence (Sorcery) Build → Astrologer
Target stats: 60–80 INT, 40 VIG, 15 MND, 12 STR, 12 DEX (staff requirements)
Astrologer is the correct choice for every pure INT build. It starts with 16 INT — the highest of any class — and comes equipped with a Glintstone Staff and two sorceries that let you handle early content without melee combat. The Astrologer also has 15 MND base, which matters: more FP means more casts before you need an FP flask.
Every other class wastes 5–9 levels reaching 16 INT.
The early game advantage: Glintstone Pebble + Carian Slicer carry you through the first 20 hours of the game. Carian Slicer in particular has massive AR for its FP cost and carries through Stormveil, Raya Lucaria, and most of Liurnia.
Sorcery progression path I use personally:
- Stormveil → grab Rogier’s Rapier, keep Glintstone Pebble
- Academy → unlock Carian Slicer
- Raya Lucaria → acquire Azur’s Glintstone Staff (+25 = best sorcery staff in game)
- Liurnia Lake Shore → unlock Comet Azur (Hermit Village)
- Cerulean Hidden Tear → Wondrous Physick for infinite cast window
INT soft caps: 30 (scaling surge), 45 (diminishing), 60 (second surge), 80 (hard cap). Most builds stop at 60. Going to 80 gives +8–12% more spell damage depending on the sorcery — worth it only for PvE endgame.
4. Faith (Incantation) Build → Prophet
Target stats: 45–60 FTH, 30 ARC (Dragon Communion), 40 VIG, 15 STR/DEX (seal minimums)
Prophet starts with 16 FTH — highest in the game — and comes with a heal incantation and the Catch Flame spell. Catch Flame has very high AR for its FP cost and carries early game reliably.
However, Prophet also has the lowest Endurance (8) and lowest Vigor (10) of any class. The first 10 hours of a Prophet run involve dying more than you’d like to non-boss enemies because you have almost no survivability. Manage expectations.
Faith build archetypes and their stat priorities:
| Archetype | Primary | Secondary | Seal | Key Incantations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lightning Faith | 60 FTH | 25 STR | Dragon Communion | Lightning Spear, Electrify Armament |
| Dragon Communion | 30 FTH | 50 ARC | Dragon Communion | Dragonfire, Rotten Breath |
| Bloodflame | 30 FTH | 45 ARC | Dragon Communion | Bloodflame Blade |
| Holy/Erdtree | 60 FTH | — | Erdtree | Erdtree Heal, Radagon’s Rings |
Prophet vs Confessor for Faith builds: Confessor starts at level 10 (higher than Prophet’s 7) but has 12 STR and 12 DEX — useful if you plan to use a quality/faith hybrid. Prophet is leaner and better for pure faith or dragon communion builds where STR/DEX investment is minimal.
5. Arcane (Bleed/Poison) Build → Bandit
Target stats: 45–80 ARC, 40 VIG, 15 DEX, 12 STR
Bandit starts with the highest Arcane (14) of any class and costs only level 5 to start — the lowest starting level after Wretch. Low starting level means every Rune Level you gain from here goes into your target stats with no waste.
The Bandit’s Curved Sword starting weapon also has innate bleed, which makes the early game viable while you farm the Rivers of Blood Katana (Mohgwyn Palace) or the Reduvia Dagger (early Limgrave invasion).
Why Arcane builds are the current meta (2026, patch 1.16):
- Arcane scaling was buffed in patch 1.09 and has not been reverted
- Rivers of Blood with 80 ARC + White Mask + Lord of Blood’s Exultation procs bleed in 2–3 hits on most enemies
- Bleed proc damage is calculated as a percentage of max HP — scales against every enemy type
Arcane soft caps: 20 (scaling kick), 45, 60 (hard diminishing). Rivers of Blood at 80 ARC gives approximately 11% more total bleed proc damage vs 60 ARC. Most PvP builds stop at 60 for level efficiency.
6. Intelligence/Faith (Frenzied/Aberrant) Build → Prisoner
Target stats: 45 INT, 30 FTH, 40 VIG, 15 STR/DEX minimum
Prisoner starts with 14 INT and 14 DEX — a solid dual-investment start that saves levels for Quality+INT and DEX+INT hybrids. The Prisoner is underrated because most guides focus on pure builds. For mixed builds, starting Prisoner often costs 2–4 fewer levels than starting Astrologer or Prophet.
Example: Frenzied Flame build (Frenzied Burst + Unendurable Frenzy) needs 23 FTH minimum. Prophet wastes STR/DEX going there; Prisoner wastes FTH going there. Prisoner is actually better here because 14 INT allows you to also use Memory of Grace sorceries as supplementary tools.
7. Quality Build (STR/DEX) → Vagabond
Target stats: 40 STR, 40 DEX, 40 VIG, 20 END
Vagabond starts with 14 STR and 13 DEX — the best balanced STR/DEX start of any class. It also has the highest Vigor (15) at level 1, which makes the early game the most forgiving of any class.
If you’ve never played Elden Ring before and want to use a variety of weapons without committing to a specific build, Vagabond is the correct starting class. The Longsword it comes with can carry you through the first 30 hours of the game.
Quality weapon scaling: Quality infusion adds equal STR and DEX scaling to any weapon. A +25 quality Claymore at 40/40 STR/DEX outperforms either pure stat at 60 while also giving you more flexibility. Quality builds typically stop at 40/40 and invest the rest into VIG, END, or a secondary stat.
8. Confessor — Hybrid Faith/Quality Builds
Target stats: 25 STR, 25 DEX, 45 FTH, 40 VIG
Confessor starts at level 10 — the highest starting level — which sounds like a disadvantage but isn’t. It already has 12 STR, 12 DEX, and 14 FTH invested, which mirrors exactly what most Faith/Quality hybrid builds need. You’re not wasting levels reaching those minimums.
Best for: Sacred Blade builds (Faith requirement + quality weapon), Lightning Perfume builds (minimum FTH threshold), and Blasphemous Blade builds (24 STR, 15 DEX, 22 FTH requirements).
Worst for: Pure builds. If you want 80 INT or 80 FTH, Confessor’s spread wastes 12+ levels on stats you won’t use.
9. Warrior — DEX/Arcane Bleed Hybrids
Target stats: 45 DEX, 45 ARC, 40 VIG, 20 END
Warrior starts with 16 DEX and dual Scimitars with bleed — the highest DEX start of any class. It also has 9 ARC, which is not ideal for arcane builds but acceptable for DEX-primary/ARC-secondary (like Eleonora’s Poleblade, which requires 19 DEX and 15 ARC).
Warrior is the correct choice for DEX/ARC builds where DEX is the primary scaling stat and ARC is secondary — specifically because those builds want 16 DEX base to avoid spending early Rune Levels climbing the DEX requirement ladder.
10. Wretch — Min-Max Only
Target stats: Whatever your build needs — Wretch wastes nothing
Wretch is mathematically optimal for every build because it starts at level 1 with 10 in every stat. You never pay for a stat you didn’t choose. At RL 150, a Wretch will always have 1–3 more levels invested in target stats compared to any other class.
The tradeoff: You start naked with a club. The first 4–6 hours are significantly harder. I completed one Wretch run to test the math. The real-world advantage (1–3 levels) is negligible compared to the early game difficulty penalty for most players.
When to choose Wretch: Only if you’re on a min-max challenge run, a specific level cap build (RL 100 PvP), or you’ve already cleared the game at least once.
Quick Decision Table — Which Class for Your Build
| Your build | Best class | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Strength | Hero | Highest STR base (16), minimal wasted stats |
| Pure Dexterity | Samurai | 15 DEX base, best starting weapon (Uchigatana), best early game |
| Strength/DEX Quality | Vagabond | Balanced STR/DEX, highest VIG base, easiest early game |
| Pure Intelligence / Sorcery | Astrologer | Highest INT base (16), 15 MND, comes with staff |
| Pure Faith / Incantations | Prophet | Highest FTH base (16), early heal and Catch Flame |
| Faith/Quality Hybrid | Confessor | Pre-invested 12 STR/12 DEX/14 FTH matches hybrid targets |
| Pure Arcane / Bleed | Bandit | Highest ARC base (14), lowest starting level (5) |
| DEX/Arcane Hybrid | Warrior | 16 DEX base, dual bleed scimitars |
| INT/FTH Hybrid (Aberrant) | Prisoner | 14 INT/14 DEX/6 FTH — cheapest INT+DEX hybrid start |
| Min-max any build | Wretch | Level 1, 10 in every stat, mathematically optimal |
How to Verify Your Build Before You Lock In
Once you’ve picked a class, map your stat targets before spending a single Rune Level. This saves respec costs later.
- Decide your target level (RL 125 for PvP, RL 150 for PvE endgame)
- Lock in your primary damage stat target (60 INT, 60 FTH, 80 ARC, etc.)
- Fill VIG to 40 (first hard requirement)
- Fill END to 25 (first END soft cap)
- Fill remaining levels into secondary stats
Use the Elden Ring Weapon Calculator to verify the exact Attack Rating your primary weapon hits at your planned stat spread. This prevents investing 20 levels into a stat whose scaling contribution on your specific weapon is already in diminishing returns.
I’ve seen builds with 80 DEX using a weapon with C DEX scaling. That’s 20 levels of mostly-wasted investment. The calculator shows you where returns drop off before you spend the Runes.
For visual identity — once your character is built, the Elden Ring Font Generator and Elden Ring Health Bar Generator let you create authentic golden Elden Ring title text and boss health bar overlays for streams, thumbnails, and Discord branding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my starting class after I begin? No. Your starting class is permanent. You can respec your stat allocation using a Larval Tear at Rennala — but your base stats from your class (the minimums) cannot go below your class’s starting values. You can respec everything above those minimums.
What is the best starting class for a complete beginner? Vagabond. It has the highest starting Vigor (15), comes with a solid sword and shield, and its balanced STR/DEX spread means you can use most weapons you find in the early game without needing to level up first.
Does starting class matter endgame? Yes, but only in terms of level efficiency. By RL 150, the difference between a well-chosen class and a poorly-chosen class is approximately 2–5 effective levels. At RL 300+ (long PvE playthroughs), it becomes negligible.
What’s the best class for Shadow of the Erdtree DLC builds? The DLC introduces Scadutree Fragment scaling and new Faith/Arcane incantation tools. For DLC-focused builds: Prophet or Bandit, depending on whether you’re running Faith or Arcane as your primary stat. The DLC’s final boss has high magic resistance — pure INT builds feel the pushback there.
Is Confessor good for a first playthrough? Confessor is viable but not ideal for first-timers. It starts at the highest level (10) which sounds good, but its stat spread is specialized for Faith hybrids. A pure beginner who doesn’t know their build yet is better served by Vagabond’s flexibility.
